Module 0 | The Dynamics of Impact®
This module will give you an overview of what “The Dynamics” (as a model) is and what the “dynamics” (as dimensions of the model) are.

A high level understand of what The Dynamics of Imipact® is
A summary of its 5 dimensions
An introduction to the metaphor
Executive Summary
1. The Dynamics of Impact® is a simple model to help focus your efforts to identify purpose and align your thoughts, emotions, physical energy, and relationships to it.
2. The “dynamics” are the five dimensions (just noted). Purpose. Thoughts. Emotions. Physical Energy. Relationships.
3. I use an atom as a metaphor to represent the model and help align the 5 dimensions. I do this to remind me that this is not a linear process, but a dynamic one ... always in motion.
Let’s get into it, starting with ...
The Model
The Dynamics of Impact® is the result of more than twenty years of study and practice in understanding human performance and wellness. I have found repeatedly that for a human being to really feel and act in ways that are authentic and meaningful, there are five aspects of being human they must attend to:
Purpose • Thoughts • Emotions • Physical Energy • Relationships
They are put together as a “whole” because as I’ve been taught and as I’ve experienced and observed, these individual dynamics don’t exist by themselves, and they certainly don’t have meaning on their own.
The more these are aligned, the more fulfilling and impactful a life we experience.
But before we get to how the model works together, let’s start by deconstructing it and looking at the individual parts.
The Dynamics
(The components below are sliders! Just slideLeft, where “left” is ←)
XQ | Purpose. This is the core of who you are and how you will engage this life. It is complex and simple at the same time. Start simple. Know that your purpose will mature as you grow. That is not only ok. It is good.
TQ | Thoughts. Negative thoughts are one of the great plagues of humankind. Being able to build mental focus and health are about aligning your thoughts with and in the service of your mission. It takes recognizing unhealthy thoughts and replacing them with healthy ones.
EQ | Emotions. Emotional Intelligence, a concept and term first coined by Daniel Goleman, is about aligning your emotions with your purpose. Our emotions are key indicators of how we are perceiving our self or our world ... or both. Mental health and authenticity come from embracing a hope-filled optimism.
NQ | Physical Energy (NRG) The research is in, and our physical health has significant impact on our thoughts, emotions, relationships, and our ability to act in the world. Healthy food, exercise, sleep, water, and breathing establish a foundation of strength and energy in all dimensions of The Dynamics.
SQ | Relationships. Again, research has shown that human beings are relational beings. Without them, we die. When they are unhealthy we experience all manner and level of trauma and/or disfunction. Having a healthy relation to other people, both engaging and serving, is a basic human need.
Now, you may be wondering ... what’s with the 2-letter acronyms? (XQ? TQ? ...)
Good question.
In thinking about concepts such as purpose and others from a personal perspective, it’s easy to think in binary terms. Either I’m good or I’m bad. I fail or succeed. I’m healthy or unhealthy. But in life, it’s never binary. It’s always a scale ... a quotient if you will. It’s important to keep in mind that each dynamic is something that is constantly in motion - growing one way or the other.
So, I gave each quotient, or Q, a single alpha character to act as a short hand to talk about a particular dynamic. For example, your “thought” dynamic is represented with ‘TQ,’ or, ‘thought quotient.’ It’s my shorthand for the different dynamics. This should grow in helpfulness as we go.
Next, let’s look at ...
The Metaphor

I’ve gone through several different metaphors (images) for this model before landing on an Atom.
In my limited experience, models of personal growth seem to be fairly linear. B follows A, C follows B, and so on. I wanted something that expressed the reality that as human beings we are living dynamic systems - organic and complex. I wanted an image that I could easily sketch on a napkin and which would represent the movement, growth, and interchange of the dynamics of a human being.
Let’s look at how this works.
An atom is a particle of matter that uniquely defines a chemical element. In non-science terms, it’s a really small thing from which physical objects are comprised. An atom consists of a nucleus that is orbited by one or more negatively charged electrons. The orbit of these electrons are called “shells.”
Note: This description of an atom is largely accurate, but we’re going to diverge a bit from the “actual scientific structure” of an atom so that the metaphor stays helpful
We’re going to explore this in more depth in a later module. We’re going to walk through each of the dynamics in an intentional order. Then, we’ll put it all together so it becomes something you can use in full.
Review
The Dynamics of Impact® is meant to be a framework from which to work towards health across 5 related dimensions (dynamics).
XQ | Purpose (X-Quotient)
TQ | Thoughts (Thought Quotient)
EQ | Emotions (Emotional Quotient)
NQ | Physical NRG (NRG Quotient)
SQ | Relationships (Social Quotient)
We are using the metaphor of an Atom to give us a way to see the systemic, organic nature and interlock of the 5 dynamics
